JOHN SCRANTON, of Madison, son of John.  Farmer.  Mar­ried Julia Hull, daughter of Gurdon, of Killingworth.  He was a man of more than ordinary talents, and did much public busi­ness in the town, in early part of life.

WARREN, SCRANTON, son of John, of Madison.  A farmer, surveyor and Baptist clergyman.

May 28, 1802, having obtained recommendations in favor of his character and of his qualifications for surveying land, he set out on foot for the West, (to seek  his fortune.)  He stopped a while in Riga and Bergen, N. ,Y., and afterwards went farther West, seeking a residence to his liking, and eventually located in Plymouth, Ohio.  He has preached the Gospel occasionally for forty years, and for fifty, practiced surveying land, as county sur­veyor. He has five times built him a dwelling-house, and as often sold and bought a farm.  He married, Betsey Wheelock, March 9, 1809,  daughter of Capt. Ralph, of Sturbridge, Mass., whose grandfather was the first child born, in that place.

JOSIAH SCRANTON, son of Josiah, of Madison.  Farmer.  Married Polly Stannard, of Westbrook.  They first removed from Madison to Pompey, in New York, and next to Bergen, N. Y., then back to Pompey.  His first wife died in Bergen, 1831.  He married second time, Betsey Stannard, sister of first wife.  He died April 12, 1849, aged 63.

REV. ERASTUS SCRANTON, A. M., son of Theophilus, of Madison, was graduated at Yale College, 1802. Soon after graduation he began to instruct a Grammar school, in Rocky Hill, and continued it six months, and then began the study of divinity with Rev. John Elliott, D. D. Receiving a unanimous call to become the first pastor of the Congregational church in North Mil­ford, (Milford,) afterwards Orange; he was ordained and installed July 4, 1805.  Being dismissed at his request, January 2, 1827, he preached in Wolcott, as stated supply about two years.  The Congregational church in Burlington, Conn., gave him a unani­mous call to be their pastor, which he accepted and was installed over it January 2, 1830, and dismissed May 27, 1840.  He still resides in Burlington, without charge, and occasionally preaches to neighboring congregations.  He also labored as an agent of' the Connecticut Bible Society, about four years, in the far North­ern Counties of Connecticut. Married Mary Elizabeth Prudden, of Milford, daughter of Newton and Elizabeth (Northrup,) April 10, 1806.  She is a descendant of Rev. Peter Prudden, the first minister of Milford, (1639,) and of Rev. Roger Newton, second minister of the same church, born February 3, 1785.

Rev. Erastus and Mary E., adopted, as their only child, Mary Elizabeth P., the twin daughter of Joseph Jonathan Prudden, first of Milford, and next of Bethlehem, (Litchfield,) and after­wards of Georgia; born February 27, 1819, and resides in Bur­lington. She was married to Rev. Gardner S. Browne, A. M., September 30, 1838, who was then pastor of the church in Hinsdale, N. H.  He is now (1855,) a Homeopathic Physician in Hartford. They have one daughter, (Mary Scranton,) born August 23, 1839.

PARNEL SCRANTON, daughter of Theophilus. Married, 1st, to Capt. William Whittlesey, of Saybrook, August 28, 1803.  He set sail from Guilford, July 27, 1806, for the West Indies, in his own vessel (Brig,) and arrived at Dominica, August 24. He sailed for home September 8, 1806, from Gaudaloupe; on the third or fourth day after he left, a severe hurricane came on, in which, it is probable, the vessel foundered, and he (master,) aged 33, and all the sailors were lost; never heard of.  Two brothers, Orrin Hand, aged 30, and; Leveret, mate, aged 23, of Madison;  John Brandykin, Handy Parmalee, aged 16, Joel Fowler, aged 16, and John McColly, were lost with him. They had only one child, William, born in Madison, March 21, 1804.  Mrs. Whittle­sey was remarried to John Linsley, M. D., of Woodbury.  They first removed to White Lake, N. Y., and next to Evans­ville, Indiana, where they now reside.

William Whittlesey, Esq., only child of William and Parnel, went first to White Lake, N. Y., and next to Evansville, Indiana, with his parents.  Married Catharine P. Gillespie, of White Lake, Sullivan Co., December 8, 1824; born August 10, 1804.  Merchant and land surveyor.

May 6, 1850; Alfred Garrison, b. April 30, 1852. They reside in Evansville. He is a whole­sale dry goods (Jobbing) Merchant, in com­pany with Fields, Merrell & Co., N. Y. city.

Mary Van Riper,      b. July 2, 1826; m. to Joseph P. Matthews, July 31, 1845.  4 Children, Catharine Elizabeth, b. May 11, 1846; Parnal Louisa, b. May 15, 1848; Alfred Harrison, b. October, 19, 1850; John Thomas, b. November 23, 1853.  J. P. Matthews, is a Tobacco factor and merchant, and resides at Steam Post, on Green River, Ken.

JONATHAN SCRANTON, of Madison, son of Theophilus, died of erysipelas, July 27, 1847.  He was a prominent member of the church in Madison.  .Constructor of breakwaters and wharfs, and a Farmer.  Twice married, 1st, to Roxanna Crampton, of Madison, daughter of Ashbel, January 27, 1805;. born May 80, 1789, and died December 27, 1833, aged 44.  In her life she exhibited the purity and excellancy of the Gospel.  He remarried Jemina Platt; daughter of Daniel, October, 1834.  She remarried Ebene­zer Dudley, Esq., Madison, June 13, 1853.          ­

CHARLOTTE SCRANTON, second daughter of Theophilus, died March 5, 1823, aged 40.   She lived much respected, and died lamented by all her acquaintance.  She married Nathan Clark, of Orange, son of Benjamin arid Sarah (Rogers,) 1806.  Farmer.  No issue.

He remarried Caroline Fowler, of, Guilford, daughter of Har­vey. They removed to Mendon, Illinois, and died there and two of their children, of the cholera, all within the same week, 1853.

109.

CHLOE SCRANTON, third daughter of Theophilus, was twice married. 1st. to Reuben Judson, of Woodbury; November 28, 1805.  Farmer.  He died November 18, 1808, of consumption.  They had one daughter, living, Charlotte Matilda, born December 3, 1806, and one that died in infancy. Charlotte M. married Timothy Vincent Meigs, Esq., of Madison, Nov. 29, 1832.  They had a son, Timothy Marshall, born June 16, 1848.  She died  suddenly, after protracted illness, October 15, 1852, aged 46.  He is now (1855,) insane, with some hopes of return of reason.

Mrs. Chloe Judson married, 2d time, Nathan Bushnell, of Madison, January 18, 1823; born in Saybrook.

Cornelius S. Bushnell, of New Haven. Grocer, merchant.  He m Emily Fowler Clark, dr. of Samuel and Emeline (Fowler and now Mrs. Higbey,) July 19, 1849; b. October 20, 1810. They have three children, Sereno Scran­ton, b. July 19, 1850; Samuel Clark, b. March 9, 1852; Charlotte Beecher, b. August 24, 1853.

THEOPHILUS SCRANTON, of Madison, son of Theophilus.  Farmer.  He owned the line of stages that ran and carried the mail between New Haven and Saybrook, for years.  He was twice married.  1st, to Elizabeth Warner, of Guilford, (E. River,) daughter of Chapman, July 2, 1810; born October 26, 1788; died July 11, 1845, aged 57.

2d, to Widow Lucretia Nott, of Saybrook, daughter of Samuel Snow, June 23, 1848.  Her first husband was Albert Nott.

COL. ICHABOD LEE SCRANTON, of New Haven, son of Theophalus.  He was first a merchant in Madison, and removed to New Haven, and is there a dealer in coal and groceries.

He was twice married. 1st, to Artemesia Hand, of Madison, daughter, of Daniel Hand, Esq. and granddaughter of Daniel and Chloe (Scranton) Meigs, of Madison, 1830; b. September 12, 1807, and died June 13, 1838, aged 30.

2d, to Lucy Ann Easton, of New York city, daughter of Charles; born in Utica, N. Y., March 1, 1808.

He was unanimously nominated, by the brigade officers, to he appointed brigadier-general, but declined the honor.

HENRY SCRANTON, son of Theophilus.  Farmer.  His dwelling-house is nearly on the old site, occupied by that of his great-grand­father, Capt. John Scranton, of  Madison.

He was thrice married. 1st. to Rachel Linsley, of Northford, (N. Branford,) daughter of Josiah, Esq., May 19, 1823; born October 14, 1800, and died April 28, 1841, aged 41, much beloved, and at death much lamented.

2d. to Sally Linsley, of Northford, daughter of Col. Ralph, December 3, 1844, died December 3, 1847, aged 45.

3d, to Delia Fitch, of North Guilford, daughter of Dr. Fitch, August 15, 1848; born March 28, 1807.

 WILLIAM A. SCRANTON, of Paris, N. Y., son of Alexander.  When about 16, he resolved to acquire an education, if possible. With much hard labor and effort, he succeeded in earning the means of education, by teaching writing in the evenings, and com­mon and select schools, in day time, while studying. Soon after he began school-teaching, he became a hopeful subject of divine grace, and believed he ought to be a preacher, &c. He was a devoted Baptist minister of the gospel many years, in Rochester, N. Y. Having purchased a farm in Brandon, Mich., as a perma­nent residence for his family, and just arrived there, he sickened and died, May, 1841.

He married Electa Post, April 25, 1819, daughter of Titus and Rumah. She died in Brandon, Mich., Sept. 4, 1841; born in Paris, N. Y., January 25, 1801.

MERCY SCRANTON, daughter of Alexander. She married Raymond Weeks, of Paris, October, 1824. He is a manufacturer of axes and scythes. She died in 1832, (four days after her father,) of the puerperal fever, and her infant at the same time. They lost two infants before, and had a son named David, still living.

Mr. Weeks married again, and has several children by second wife.

CATHARINE SCRANTON, daughter of Alexander, was married to Amos Moore, of Paris, January 1, 1828, who died in 1830. She remarried Harvey Reynalds, of Kinderhook, N. Y., in 1832, and by him had one daughter, named Harriet, living with her father. Mrs. Reynalds died in 1842.

ALEXANDER SCRANTON, ESQ., of Brunswick, Ga. the only surviving child of Alexander, Sen., was an infant when his parents went to Paris, N. Y.  He was thrice married.

1st, to Zilpha Mack, daughter of Jonathan, of said Paris, De­cember 19, 1827. She was born 1808. In the winter of 1831. they removed to Savannah, Ga.  She died, of quick consumption, in the autumn of 1836, while on a visit to the home of her parents in New York, aged 44.

2d, to Esther Stetson, widow of Daniel, a merchant, of Riceborough, Ga., April 19, 1837.  Her maiden name was E. Ginny, of Fair Haven, Mass.  She died October 26, 1840.

3d, to Mary D. Moore, widow of James, and daughter of George and Mary Abbott, of Glyn Co., Ga., January 22, 1845.

In 1839, he, with his second wife and family, removed to Brunswick, He is postmaster of Brunswick, and has been for the last fourteen years; also, Clerk of the Superior, Inferior and Ordinary (Probate Court) Courts, Notary Public, Commis­sioner, and holds other offices &c. He is moreover a merchant; a farmer, raising sea-island cotton, and owns fifty-two salves. He is an active business man.

ALONZO L. SCRANTON son of Alexander. Married Mary Avery, of Paris, sister of Judge Avery, January, 1830, and died August, 1830, of consumption, only about six months after mar­riage. He remarried Maria Eadon, daughter of Thomas Esq., of Savannah, Ga. 1835. She died of consumption, in 1841 at her father’s residence in Savannah; and he (Alonzo L.) died in Kinderhook, N. Y., December 14, 1841.

They had two children; both died in infancy, a few days old.

EMMONS SCRANTON, son of Alexander, never married. He was a forwarding and commission merchant in Kinderhook, N. Y., and kept there a hotel.  He was killed in 1810, at Kirkville, by a fall.

AMY SCRANTON, daughter of Alexander, married Fenn C. Woodruff, of Clinton, N. Y., 1831. In 1835, they removed to Ohio, where she died of consumption. 1842, leaving a son. He remarried in 1843, and died in 1844.

HARRIETT SCRANTON, daughter of Alexander, married Dr. Ervin Fisk, of Kirkville, N. Y., November 21, 1841, and died in forty days after marriage, January 1, 1843.  After her death, Dr. Fisk removed to Clinton Co., Ill.. and he died there in 1845.

HAMLET SCRANTON, of Rochester N. Y., son of Abraham, of Durham.  He was one of the first settlers of Rochester to which place he went May 1, 1812, and began to fall the trees and erect a log house.  *Previous to this he had resided a while in Turin. Lewis Co.  He was there a justice of the peace, and a side judge of the County Court. He died of a second stroke of apoplexy, April, 1851, aged 78, a man of Puritan faith, much esteemed and respected.  He married  Hannah Dimmek, daughter of Daniel and Thankful (Merriman,) August 20. 1774. She was born in Durham, May 22, 1774.

About twelve years afterward the bones of a female were found in upper Middletown, (Cromwell,) and supposed to be her’s.  David was administrator of the estate of his brother Joy. [Middletown probate records, May 17, 1817.]

Y.  He died when their children were young, July 8, 1829.  She remarried some years after the death of her husband, to Artemas Walker, July, 1843.  Farmer.  She died April 1, 1854.

CHARLES F. SCRANTON, of Charleston, son of Ichabod. He left home in August, 1819, for Vincennes, la., and traveled thither on foot. In 1850, he set out for California, across the continent, driving an ox team all the way. He married Olivia Sparks, of Grand Prairie, Ill, November, 1824, daughter of John, an Englishman, and her mother from Dublin city, in Ireland.  They are both members of the Campbell church, and have been for twelve years.  Joiner, carpenter and merchant.

Mary Edwards                    b. in Lafayette, December 5, 1831;  now lives with her aunt Goodrich.

He died when their youngest daughter was a babe.

After about five years, his widow remarried Hiram Dunlap.  They had one son, Hiram S., b. September 16, 1837, in Lafayette.

       About a year after marriage, he died, and she removed to Lafayette, where, after about four years, she died, 1845.

EUNICE SCRANTON, daughter of Stephen, of Brighton, Ohio, married Rev. Stephen William Taylor, LL. D., President of Mad­ison University, Hamilton, N. Y., October 2, 1817, in Edmeston, N. Y. He was born in Adams, Mass., October 23, 1791. (Her sister Harriet, unmarried, lives in their family.)

Presbyterian Church in Cleveland.  Farmer.  He mar­ried Irene P. Hickox, daughter of David.  She finished her education at Mrs. Pierce's Seminary, Litchfield, Conn., about 1829, and is a member of the Congregational Church in Cleveland.

CHARITY SCRANTON, daughter of Daniel, married William B. Kingman, born in Northampton, Mass., October, 1833.  They reside in Wisconsin.

They have four children, three daughters and a son.  The old­est daughter is a deaf mute, and is in the Asylum or Deaf and Dumb Institute, in Delavan, Wisconsin.

Y., January 1, 1782.  Farmer.  He was thrice married.  1st, to Lucretia Andrus, in 1805.  She died March 26, 1828.  2d, to Rebecca Hough, August, 1828.  She died in 1836, without issue.  3d, to Loiza Hough, October, 1836, half-sister of his second wife.

He had five daughters by his first wife, not named, and two sons.

For several years she taught a high school for young females. She possessed estimable qualifications for teaching, and, was much respected and beloved by her acquaintances, and was a mother indeed to his six children by his former wife.
