Left a family of three children in Louisiana.

ERASTUS CLARK SCRANTON, of Madison, son of Jonathan.  First a merchant in Augusta, Geo., and afterward and still engaged in commerce;  is an owner in a line of packets running between New York and Liverpool, England, and in ships making voyages elsewhere.  He has been thrice a member of the General Assembly of Conn., 1845, 1846, 1851.  Married Lydia Stannard, of Westbrook, daughter of Ezra, November 4, 1829, born Octo­ber 8, 1808.

JOSEPH HAND SCRANTON, of Scranton, Penn., son of Jona­than.  He was formerly a merchant in Augusta, Geo., and now (1855,) an agent and superintendent of some of the iron works of said Scranton.  He was twice married, 1st, Eliza Maria Wil­cox, of Madison, daughter of Col. J. Samuel, August 1, 1837; born February 22, 1823, and died August 3, 1841, at her father's residence, on a visit there from Georgia.  Her husband being so sick at the time that he had no knowledge of her death.  Remarried Cornelia Walker, of Lenox, Mass., daughter of Judge William P., of Lenox, July 3, 1843.

COL. GEORGE W. SCRANTON, of Scranton, Penn., son of Theophilus, of Madison, Conn.  He first carried on the business of manufacturing iron, in Belvidere, N. J.  Having purchased a large tract of land in Luzerne Co., Penn., he, with his brother Selden T., commenced manufacturing iron, from the inexhausti­ble quantities of coal and iron ore, existing in Scranton, and the region round about that place.  Thus may they be accounted the originators of the great, if not the most extensive and complete iron works in our country.  Married Jane Hiles, of Belvidere, N, J., January 21, 1835, daughter of George and Jane; born 1811.

CHARLES SCRANTON, of Oxford Furnace, N. J., son of Theoph­ilus, of Madison, Conn. He owns an extensive tract of land in New Jersey, which contains vast quantities of iron ore and wood for coal, and is doing a large business in casting wheels for rail­road cars, &c.

He married Jane Ann Henry, June 18, 1847, daughter of William and sister of Selden T's wife.

ABIGAIL SCRANTON, daughter of Hubbard, married Austin Doud, of Madison, son of Billy, October 26, 1835 ; died January 5, 1854, aged 43 years and 5, months.  He was first a farmer for ten years or more;  since a ship-master.  He died January 5, 1855.  No issue.

PARNELLA SCRANTON, daughter of Hubbard, married Richard E. Rice, A. M., who was graduated at Yale College, 1839, Sep­tember 1, 1845.

He taught a select school for youth or lads, first in Madison, and now resides in Stamford, instructing youth and lads in his own house in the primary branches of education. The youth are boarded, and provided for in his family.

EDWIN SCRANTOM, of Rochester, son of Hamlet.  In his boyhood, (aged 12,) he went with his father and family to Roch­ester, there being only two or three log houses in that place.  He was educated to the printing business, in which he continued till about 1835, since then he has been an auctioneer and com­mission merchant, and a general agent for collecting and remitting money, &c., to England, Scotland, Ireland, France and Germany.  For ten or more years past he has been an active and influential elder in the second Presbyterian (brick) church in that city.

Married Mary Ann Sibley, of Walpole, N. H., daughter of Asa and Irene, October 26, 1825, born December 18, 1804.

[Edwin O. Hall, first a missionary at Sandwich Islands, and now one of the King's Cabinet, is nephew to Mrs. E. Scrantom.]

M. M. Cass, cabinet workman, is now at Fort Madison, Lee Co., Iowa.  He invented a gun, (a 26 shooter as it was called,) self loading, &c., for which he obtained a patent, &c. He spent much time and money on the subject of guns, and eventually became insane on that subject, and had to be confined a while in the asylum. There is little or no probability of the restoration of his reason.  The children are with and provided for by their grandfather, L. Scranton, of Utica.
