CAPT. ICHABOD SCRANTON, of Madison, son of John. Farmer. His residence was about half a mile east of the church, in said place. He was a Capt. in the old French war, and went in that capacity to Louisburg. (Cape Breton) and to Ticonderoga. On his returning home from the latter place, he caught the small pox, at Albany, N. Y., which caused his death, December 1, 1760, aged 43, and was buried in the night on Clabbord Hill. privately. He was a man of patriotism, enterprise and also strong and brave, and his death deemed a public loss. The place of his grave can not be ascertained. Several soldiers of his company died during the campaign at the North.
He married Chloe Fowler, second daughter of Abraham, Esq., of Guilford. She was born March 3, 1723, O. S., and died suddenly in usual health, December 3, 1791, aged 69. She regarded Mr. Whitfield's preaching as the means of her conversion to Christ.

HANNAH SCRANTON, daughter of John third, was married to Nathaniel Allis, of Madison, November 20, 1739. She died January 10, 1783, aged 65. He died April 16, 1804, aged 87.

It was formerly customary when a family moved to
reside in a new
house, to make an entertainment, called a house warming.
Mrs. Chloe Scranton, relict of Capt. Ichabod,
when she and her son Ichabod moved into the house he had erected for
them, she
wished to substitute therefore, religious exercises, and to invite Rev.
A.
Mansfield to preach on the occasion, &c.
He selected for his discourse, the appropriate text, Joshua, 24;
“As for me and my house, we will serve
the Lord.”
NOTE: Sarah Chittenden, daughter of Capt. David 3d, of North Guilford, married Abner Benton, August 28, 1837, son of Lot. She was born February I, 1818. They removed to Mendon, Illinois. 2 children.

REBECCA SCRANTON, daughter of John third, was twice married. 1st to David Hoyt, of Madison, who died not long after marriage. 2d time to John Hill of Madison, She died May 5, 1798, aged 76. He died July 23, 1786.

EBENEZER SCRANTON, son of Ebenezer, emigrated as appears, to the eastern part of Connecticut or to Rhode Island, where he married about 1750, and had children, George, born 1751, see No, 82, Elnathan, born about 1753, Stafford, born 1755, and Samuel born about 1757.

ANN SCRANTON, daughter of Ebenezer, married to John Dobell or Dibble, of Boston. about 1751. They had a son in Boston, and also a daughter Abigail, whom their grandfather mentions in big last will. Son might be then 18 or 19 years old.

JARED SCRANTON of North Guilford, son of Ebenezer, (10) died November 12, 1816. Farmer. Married Lucretia Russell, January 1, 1766, daughter _________, died June 14, 1813.

TIMOTHY SCRANTON, of North Madison, (afterwards of ______,) son of Samuel. Farmer. He married Abigail Torrey, of Boston, Mass., November 23, 1748, and died December 10, 1778. They had two sons who served in the Revolution.
Remarried widow Anna Fields December 15, 1779, and married third time, Comfort Richmond, Nov. 15, 1797; died 1834.

ABRAHAM SCRANTON, of Durham, son of Samuel, Jun. He was the first of the name that settled in Durham. Married Beulah Seward, of Durham, daughter of Joseph, Jun., and died about 1756. Remarried Eleanor, about 1760. She died April 26, 1797.

The final, settlement of his estate, as by will, was completed July 3, 1780, i. e., Ichabod being then 18. [Middletown Probate Records.]

NOTE: Timothy petitioned the General Assembly, at special session at Hartford, to grant him pay for nursing his son Timothy, during his sickness on furlough, and for providing for him in time of said sickness; and the Assembly granted him said petition. His son recovered and served in Col. Ward’s regiment during the war, and had a pension. [See Hon. R. R. Hinman’s War statement, p. 230.]
The names of several Scrantons are here inserted; the time of their birth and death, and who were their parents, we have not perhaps correctly ascertained.
82 George Scranton. If this is the youth who went to sea, and was eventually lost, and is the father of George, (No. 83,) then is there not a mistake in the statement of these four sons? Stafford, Elnathan, Samuel and George. The four are brothers.
83. George Scranton, Jun., born about 1750, in or near Greenville, Rhode Island, and died May 1823, aged 73.

__________ SCRANTON, of Connecticut. Who were his parents the compiler could not ascertain. Married Hannah Guest, of Maryland: (New York, probably,) about 1786, who was born January 17, 1761, and died, aged 82. One son, James A.
84 James A. Scranton. When he was only two weeks old, his father died, July 2, 1788.
The Mother of James A. Remarried James Robinson, March 1, 1802. They emigrated to Chillicothe, Ohio. In this place James A. was educated, mainly by his own efforts. She died August 5, 1843. After her death and before he, (John Robinson,) died, which occurred August 25, 1847, he disposed of her property, which belonged justly to James A. He filed a bill in chancery to recover it, but before the matter came to trial, he died and his heirs lost it.
